What’s a Doula?
A doula is trained birth professional who provides evidence-based informational, educational, & physical support to a birthing person. A doula empowers, educates, & supports a mother through her entire journey from pregnancy through postpartum.
Now for a less formal definition? Your birth bestie. Your postpartum pal. Your resource, guide, listening ear, sister, coach, & beyond, walking you through alllll the stages of your journey to motherhood.
-Looking for techniques & comfort measures to ease your pain during labor? A doula’s got it.
-Desiring to unpack your birth and talk through your experience postpartum? You guessed it. That’s a doula’s job.
-Finding yourself down a middle-of-the-night google vortex of symptom checking & forums, but instead wanting a one-stop-shop for the latest evidenced-based information to help you make informed choices throughout your pregnancy & labor? Yep! A doula is what you’re looking for.
-Searching for advice on how to baby wear, what’s normal baby blues vs. a postpartum mood disorder, what your pain management options are during birth, what proper postpartum nutrition looks like, how to protect your pelvic floor, how to plan for a healthy and healing postpartum transition in your fourth trimester, how to create a birth plan that’s actually implementable, what your rights and choices are during your labor, how to troubleshoot breastfeeding issues, when you’ll feel “normal” again, and beyond? You already know the answer here. A doula!
Doula comes from the Greek word, “female servant”. For millennia, women have given birth around the world with the support & care of a village. This may include a partner, OB, midwife, doulas, family, aunts, cousins, elders, and neighbors.
When you’re busy wondering, hoping, planning and taking care of your baby, who is taking care of you? A doula!
Gone are the days when the word doula was associated with a certain stereotype. Doulas can be used anywhere, with any type of birth. Waterbirth at home? Absolutely. Hospital birth with epidural? We’ve got you.
Modern mothers realize that it does take a village to bring a child into this world and doulas are a vital part of that village.
We mother the mother—providing unbiased, evidence-based, and compassionate support through each phase of your journey through motherhood.
